Abba costumes make great fancy dress outfits but they are also worn by tribute bands, who impersonate Abba and play their songs on stage.
If you’re looking for an Abba costume to wear to a fancy dress party you basically have four choices of which band member you want to look like!
Your character choices are Agnetha, Anni-Frid, Bjorn or Benny. The four band members usually wore matching outfits so if you’ve got three friends to go with you could co-ordinate your outfits and go together as the complete band. The way to differentiate between the band members is by hair colour or facial hair!
If four of you are coordinating, one girl should wear a blonde Agnetha wig and one of you should wear a brown Anni-Frid wig. For the guys, whoever gets the role as Benny should have brown hair or wear a brown wig and a brown beard and moustache. The Bjorn look-alike should wear a lighter brown 70’s style wig.
You can even buy matching Abba costumes for couples, such as the Abba Bjorn and Agnetha combination, which consists of matching white and gold outfits. For the Bjorn costume you get a white shiny top and matching trousers with gold trim, and a gold jacket. For the Agnetha costume you get a short, white silky dress with gold motif. And to complete both outfits you need to add accessories, like wigs and platform boots. You can also get a matching Anna-Frid and Benny costume combination.
Of course you don’t necessarily have to decide on a specific band member, as there are lots of generic Abba costumes available to buy. Most of them are white and include either flares or short skirts, with platform boots and appropriate 70’s style flick wigs. But you don’t have to wear white as Abba wore many different costumes during their career, and some of them were very bright colours.
Just think of recent box-office hit movie, Mama Mia, and the costumes that Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth wear in the outtakes at the end of the film, when the credits roll. They have fantastic, outrageous costumes so make yours as colourful and sequined as you dare!
Platform boots are a must for Abba costumes, as are wigs and for ladies wear really 70’s style eye makeup and lots of glitter. You can also accessorise your outfits with a glitter microphone or some brightly coloured round sunglasses.
If you’re feeling a bit stuck for ideas look for 70’s costumes and you’ll start to get the picture. Alternatively look for some pictures of Abba and base your costume on one of theirs. To get in the mood stick on some Abba music and it’ll soon have you dancing around the room like a “Dancing Queen”!
If you’re trying to think of an Abba associated theme for a party you could throw a “Eurovision” party and then wear an Abba costume, but that way it gives other guests the opportunity to wear other costumes.
Abba costumes are generally easy to put together and there are plenty of complete outfits available to buy, as well as lots of Abba wigs and accessories.
